Maruti's Nov sales up 7.8%

Maruti Udyog Ltd, India's largest car manufacturer, on Wednesday reported a 7.8 per cent jump in sales in November even though its flagship Maruti-800 car saw a slump.

Maruti sold 42,842 cars in November 2004 as opposed to 39,745 units in the same month last year, a company press release said in New Delhi.

Maruti-800 sales slumped 39 per cent to 8958 units as against 14,671 cars sold in November 2003.

During April-November, Maruti reported a 18.8 per cent jump in sales to 3,45,713 cars when compared to 2,90,928 cars sold in the corresponding period previous year.

Maruti said its A2 segment cars - Alto, Wagon-R and Zen - saw a massive 46.7 per cent jump in sales at 22,933 units in November while the A3 segment - Baleno and Esteem models - witnessed a more than three-fold rise to 3346.

The company also more than doubled the sales of its MUVs - Gypsy and Vitara - to 326 in the month under review.

The 42,842 cars sold in November included 1894 units of exports, the release said. Exports in November were, however, 47.5 per cent lower than 3608 cars exported in the same month last fiscal.

In April-November 2004, Maruti-800 sales slumped 26.6 per cent to 80,462 units as against 109,561 units sold in the same period previous fiscal.
