Shiv Sena, which once opposed the controversial Dabhol Power Company, said on Thursday that it was not averse to buying power from the company to tide over the acute power shortage that is being faced by the state.

Leader of the Opposition Narayan Rane, told Zee News that if the saffron combine comes to power, his party was in favour of reviving the project.

Sena had earlier opposed the Democratic Front government for buying power from DPC at a higher rate.

"As of now, it costs almost Rs 3.50 per unit for the state to generate power by any source, be it thermal, water or gas. Then what's wrong if we buy power from Dabhol at lesser rate", Rane said.

According to the senior Sena leader looking at the power scenario it was essential to set up new generation units. But this would take at least 5 to 7 years and the state cannot wait that long.

"Since the Dabhol project already exists, it will not be improper to purchase power from this project", he said.

Rane held the DF government responsible for power shortage in the state and said it had not made any move to reduce the gap between demand and supply.

The Sena-BJP alliance rode to power defeating Congress in 1995, and one of its poll issues was opposition to purchase of power from Dabhol power project.
