Power Minister Anant Geete said on Tuesday that the finance ministry is considering a proposal to restart the Dabhol Power plant, now lying idle for nearly two years.

"Centre has no direct role to play in the matter as the project is a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and US-based Enron Corporation," Geete told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on Electricity Act, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

He, however, emphasised that his ministry was committed to extend all possible help towards restarting the project.

"The matter is before the finance ministry and I hope for a decision in this regard soon", he added.

The project has been lying defunct for the past two years as problems arose between the state government and private producer over payments for power supplied to the former.

The 740-MW project is promoted by Enron Corporation, now facing bankruptcy proceedings. Enron holds the majority 65 per cent stake, with the state government holds 15 per cent and the remaining is shared between GE and Bechtel.
