Anita Dongre has arrived in the Big Apple!

Dongre's first American store 'Grassroot' has opened its doors to customers in New York City's SoHo fashion district.

The wellknown designer, who started with two sewing machines in the balcony of her Mumbai home, is the first India-based fashion designer to open a flagship store in the fashion capital.

The designer will launch a bridal store in the following weeks.

The 1,500 square feet space is located in one of SoHo's historic 1890 Romanesque Revival masonry buildings designed by architect Alfred Zucker in brick and sandstone.

'Grassroot' is Dongre's youngest brand that celebrates Indian craft through contemporary clothing.

The store is designed by architect Shonan Trehan. The space is bathed in natural light and accented by elements in rose gold, cork and recycled wood.

It has 'custom-made racks that give a nod to the humble shuttle (used to handweave fabric) and dreamy wall panels of handwoven chanderi and khadi that tell the journey of the brand.'

'To the city that never sleeps, Grassroot brings a world of patience and crafts that don't submit to a schedule,' said Dongre.

'Every piece of fabric woven, block printed or embroidered is done by a group of artisans who give it the time and attention it deserves.'
