In stunning photos: The supermoon trilogy begins!

It was the biggest full moon of 2017. The next two supermoons will occur in January 2018.

This phenomenon occurs when the full moon is at the closest point of its orbit to the Earth, making it appear bigger and brighter than usual.

But it is the third supermoon -- on January 31, 2018 -- which will be the most special. It will also be a "blue moon" and coincide with a lunar eclipse.
