Believe it or not, women are generally happier than men.

A survey has found that most women enjoy where they live, their quality of life and their balance between work and leisure -- in fact more than a third of the respondents ranked their happiness as eight out of 10 or higher.

Only a quarter of men said they were this happy, the survey of 4,423 adults has found. Moreover, it also found that the happiest women were those who were married or retired, the Daily Express reported.

Natalie Cowen of First Direct bank, which commissioned the poll, said, "It is evident that gender difference plays a huge part in how satisfied we are. Some of today's little life pleasures are helping women love life at the moment, such as watching their favourite TV show, music and their pets."

One area where women were less satisfied than men was their love life. But the biggest bugbear for them was their weight. A third said it was the one area of their life they would most like to change, the survey found.

Do you think gender plays a role in how happy we are as individuals?
