'For people in the fashion industry or any job that is unconventional, it is hard to find a place (to stay). Loans are denied to anyone who doesn't have a salaried job,' says leggy model Radhika Nair of the challenges one faces while working in a creative profession.

First break

I was always drawn towards modelling.

I was studying commerce in Bangalore and happy doing small fashion events.

In 2012, one of my friends introduced me to Anima Creative Management.

I sent them my portfolio and that’s how I bagged a few editorial shoots for magazines like Grazia.

During my first show, I felt very shy and nervous walking with established models, but I tried my best not to let that affect my confidence.

After a few shows, I got better at it.

Now I work with Inega Model Management.

The challenges

It is difficult to explain to people about your job.

For people in the fashion industry or any job that is unconventional, it is hard to find a place (to stay).

Loans are denied to anyone who doesn't have a salaried job.

Society cannot progress if we do not have schemes for individuals in such professions.

The perks

As a model you get to travel to a lot of new places and experience a new lifestyle.

I was working in Germany for three months and I enjoyed the experience.

I still cannot get over my experience of Seychelles -- the sight of clear water was so soothing to the eyes.

The learnings

You’ll meet all kinds of people in your life. Some will try to pull you down. But you have to learn to ignore the wrong ones and hold your own.

Health and beauty tips

I have been genetically blessed with a good metabolism so I don’t put on weight.

Whenever I have the time, I do stretching exercises.

Of late, I have started to drink more water.

My style

I am not a colour person. I like pastels, grey and black.

Advice for aspirants

Don’t try too hard to fit in, do not try to please everyone. Be yourself, people will eventually accept you.
