Some of the simple things we are doing every day may not necessarily be good for our health, says Shameem Akthar.

The market for do-it-yourself health ideas is rather aggressive.

We often end up succumbing to their lure, drawn by how you would do yourself a world of good. We are particularly susceptible when this spin brings in the idea of personal hygiene.

Health experts also play into it, either knowingly or unknowingly.

Outdated products or those trashed in their home country, for certain dangers, get dumped into developing countries which are keen to follow the leaders.

If we keep the jargon aside, it could mean that habits or products or fads that were sold to you as healthy may actually be doing you a lot of harm.

Some of these are pretty surprisingly commonplace and many of us are "guilty" of doing us a lot of harm.

Shameem Akthar, yogacharya trained with the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, takes you through five such things which may sound good but are actually harmful for your health.
