'I am happy to be on the advisory committee of the Fit India movement envisaged by our Honourable PM. Hoping to lend my support in finding fun, easy ways to make every Indian fit and making this movement/vision a success,' Shilpa Shetty said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Fit India' Movement' on Thursday, saying the initiative is the need of the hour and will take the country towards a healthier future.
At a colourful ceremony, which included a presentation of India's indigenous martial art forms, dances and sports, Modi said technology has contributed to a sedentary lifestyle.
"Fitness has always been an integral part of our culture. But there is indifference towards fitness issues now. A few decades back, a normal person would walk 8 to 10 km in a day, do cycling or run," Modi said at the event.
"But with technology, physical activity has reduced. We walk less now and the same technology tells us that we are not walking enough," he added.
The launch was also attended by sports minister Kiren Rijiju, this year's National Sports Awards winners and Shilpa Shetty.
On August 23, the actor had shared how excited she was to be a part of the committee.
'I am happy to be on the advisory committee of the Fit India movement envisaged by our Honourable PM. Hoping to lend my support in finding fun, easy ways to make every Indian fit and making this movement/vision a success,' Shilpa wrote on Twitter.
Shilpa has been sharing videos of her doing yoga with her 6 million followers on Twitter and 12.7 million followers on Instagram.
After launching the initiative, Shilpa thanked the Prime Minister and revealed her plans of how she plans to make India fit and healthy.
"The #FitIndia campaign officially begins with the loudest cheer... a movement towards a fitter nation. Join us as we inch closer to the fruition of our Hon'ble Prime Minister,@narendramodi's vision of a healthier future for India."
"Thank you so much, Sir, for choosing me to be a part of this visionary initiative. So wonderfully said by Modi ji, 'There are no shortcuts to success, you have to take the stairs." (In the direction of fitness) So true!"
"It gives me immense pride to know that our future generations will have equal opportunities to adapt to a wholesome lifestyle."
