Country music superstar Blake Shelton has been announced as the 'Sexiest Man Alive' by People magazine.

A coach and judge on NBC's The Voice, Blake has been dating pop singer Gwen Stefani -- who is also a judge on the show -- for two years.

With a fan base of millions -- 2 million followers on Instagram, and over 20 million followers on Twitter -- the country singer's latest album, Texoma Shore hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums this week.

Commenting about the title Blake said in a statement, 'I've been ugly my whole life. If I can be sexy for a year, I'm taking it!'

Uploading the November cover of People magazine, which features him, on Instagram, Blake wrote: 'Thank you @people!! Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.'

According to the singer, he had to be convinced by Gwen to accept the honour.

'She goes, 'Listen to me, you're going to regret this for the rest of your life if you don't take this gift and just live in the moment,' Shelton said of Stefani.

However, the Twitterati don't seem too pleased with the news.

'Blake Shelton is People's Sexiest Man Alive because apparently Idris Elba, Chris Evans and Jason Momoa fell off the planet last night,' wrote one user.

'Even a straight man can see there's no way Blake Shelton is the sexiest man alive. I don't think he's even the sexiest man named Blake Shelton,' said another user on Twitter.

'Trump is President. Blake Shelton is the Sexiest Man Alive. Snooki better start planning her Nobel Prize speech,' added a user.

"Hey @blakeshelton...take it from me. Humble only gets you so far. Milk the sexy status for ALL it's worth. The reign goes all too quickly," added Hugh Jackman, who won the title in 2008.

Men who have received this title in the past include Dwayne Johnson, David Beckham, Chris Hemsworth, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Johnny Depp and Hugh Jackman, just to name a few.

Dear readers, do you feel that Blake Shelton was the best choice for the title?

Or could there have been a better choice?
