What to eat when you're in Amritsar

There's more to Amritsar than the Golden Temple and its myriad places of historic interest.

Chef Vikas Khanna's recent book is a tribute to the city's exquisite cuisine.

In the first of a two-part series, we bring you an excerpt from the book Amritsar: The Flavours of the Golden City.

True to its title, the book takes us on an exciting journey filled with memories from his childhood, interesting places to eat at in the city and of course... recipes!

Papadwala Baazar is the best place to pick up Anar Dana Papad.

For Matthi, do visit Dugra Sweets at Hall Bazaar.

Gian Chand's Lassi, located opposite Regent Cinema, is an institution in Punjab.

Duga Ice Creams at Company Baug serves excellent Badam Doodh.

For delicious Chicken Tikka and Masala Tandoori Murgh, Beera's (opposite Bandari Hospital) is a must visit.

Malai Masala Murgh should be sampled at Chawla's on Lawrence Road.

Pal Dhaba, next to the old city's Hathi Gate, serves great Kharode.

Gulab Jamuns are best enjoyed at Sharma's.

Sunny Bakery on Lawrence Road serves sinful Cream Rolls.

The Halwa at Kahna Sweets deserves a mention.

Gian's at Bhandari Bridge has some excellent Khasta Kachori.

Delicious savoury Laddoos must be tried at Company Baug.

Aloo Tikkis from Mathura Chaat House are sinful.

Lubhayaram's cart, outside BBK DAV College, is famous for its Ram Pedhe.

For good-quality Chaamp, visit the cart at the parking lot of Shastri Market.

Harmandir Sahib, unsurprisingly, serves delicious Kada Prasad.

Kulchas must be sampled at Maqbool Road.

Visit Basant Avenue to taste the Bo wale Kulche.
