For the first time, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), Bombay and Delhi were ranked among top 50 engineering colleges in the world, as per QS world university rankings by subject.
Britain-based education information firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) recently released World University Rankings by subject for the year 2020.
For the World University Rankings by subject, QS had analysed over 22 million papers, producing close to 200 million citations as it ranked 1,368 global institutions across 48 subjects in five broad categories.
Across all subjects, 502 universities from the UK, Germany and France, 441 from the United States, 360 from China, Japan and South Korea combined and 165 from India were considered.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and University of Cambridge were ranked among the top three universities globally.

In the latest rankings the IIT Bombay has moved up to rank 44 from last year's rank of 53, while IIT Delhi has climbed to rank 47 from 61 last year.
Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank congratulated both the institutes on Twitter. 'According to the recent QS World University Rankings, I am happy to announce that @iitbombay & @iitdelhi have been ranked among the Top 50 Engineering and Technology colleges of the World,' he said.
While IIT Bombay scored 49.4 of 100, IIT Delhi was 46.2.
The other Indian engineering institutions that made it to the top 100 were IIT Kharagpur (ranked 86), IIT Madras (88) and IIT Kanpur (96).
Only two law schools from India made it to the law subject rankings of QS. Jindal Global Law School from Sonipat, Haryana has been ranked in the 101-150 band while the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru is listed in the 151-200 band.
