When it comes to the 110 cc scooter market, there is only one king -- the Honda Activa.

Now, the long time ruler faces a challenger, the Suzuki Burgman Street.

The Suzuki Access is doing well in the 125 cc segment but the competition increased with the introduction of new scooters like the TVS Ntorq 125, the Honda Grazia and the Aprilia SR 125.

Suzuki’s response to the competition is the Suzuki Burgman Street, the first maxi-scooter from the Suzuki stable.

There is a lot of curiosity in the Indian market as far as the maxi-scooter is concerned.

Suzuki is not the first to launch the maxi-scooter in India. The Kinetic Blaze was launched a few years ago, but it didn't do well.

Today, though, there is a demand in the Indian market for a touring scooter that is both comfortable and fashionable. And, for the moment at least, the Suzuki Burgman enjoys a monopoly.

The Indian version is a stripped-down model of the Suzuki Burgman sold internationally.

Globally, it is available up to the 638 cc engine capacity. But Suzuki wanted to play it safe in India and has introduced the Burgman with the 125cc engine only.

The Burgman’s bulky body is visually appealing. It has a chrome garnish and nice curves on the front panel, which gives it a premium feel.

It also gets an attractive compact windscreen.

The scooter has a modern full digital console which looks sporty and has great visibility even in daylight. It consists of a speedometer, odometer, two trip meter and fuel gauge. It's a feature rich console but not as rich compared to TVS Ntorq.

Suzuki has done a decent job in integrating the LED headlight and turn indicator neatly in the panel.

The profile flows beautifully through the side, where silver and black panels give it a premium look.

The rear section is also well designed, with a large grab handle bar and LED all around. The tail light is unique and neatly laid.

The seat is well cushioned and comfortable and there is ample of room for the pillion rider.

The Burgman gets the same engine as its sibling, the Suzuki Access 125. The single cylinder, air cooled 124cc engine generates 8.7hp @7000rpm of power and 10.2 Nm @5000rpm of torque.

There is lot of storage offered with this scooter.

The Burgman gets a cubby hole under the handle bar on the right side that can easily accommodate a bottle.

There is a glove box on the left side box which comes with a 12V socket to charge your mobile phone and other compatible devices.

The under-seat storage capacity is good at 21.5 litres; Suzuki Access 125 is marginally better at 21.8 litres.

The wheel base and ground clearance is identical to the Access. The wheelbase is 1265mm whereas ground clearance is also decent at 160mm.

At 5.6 litres, the full tank capacity remains the same.

The seat height is slight increased by 7mm in the Access to 780mm.

The Burgman gets a telescopic suspension and 90/90- 12 inch tubeless tyres with a 220mm disc at the front and  hydraulic mono suspension with 90/100-10 inch tubeless tyres at the rear.

However, the tyre looks disproportionate to its hefty body. It would have been better if Suzuki had opted for tyres that were a size or two bigger.

The Burgman gets a combined braking system; on applying the rear brakes, the system will automatically engage the front brake thereby reducing the overall stopping distance.

Suzuki has equipped the Burgman with a sporty looking exhaust with a sporty exhaust note.

With the hefty body work, the Burgman is 7 kg heavier than the Access.

Suzuki claims a real world mileage of 53 kmpl. If driven sensibly, it should return around 40-45 kmph.

It has aluminium foot pegs which are easily accessible.

The handle bar is set low. If you are tall, the handle bar ends may brush your knees while taking a U-turn.

The footboard is large and flat. There is an option for stretching your legs on the forward set foot rest.

Suzuki has dropped the high beam flasher and parking lock brakes which help the scooter to stay planted on an incline.

At ₹68,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), the Burgman costs ₹8-10 thousand more than the Honda Grazia and the TVS Ntorq. The latter, though, offers more features.

The Suzuki Burgman Street offers better styling than its counterparts. It is comfortable, spacious, easy to manoeuvre, well-equipped and does everything you would expect from a scooter.
