Have you been duped online?

March 06, 2007 11:00 IST

This is the age of online networking and hunting for jobs on the Internet. This is the age where personal diaries have evolved into the modern day blog.

But, before you begin all these online activities, you have to register on the concerned Web site. Be it an online networking community, an e-mail service or a shopping portal, you will first have to divulge some (and sometimes many) personal details.

This could include your name, cell phone number, credit card details, postal address, etc, etc, etc.

Many Web sites you register on might be harmless; some may not. There have been instances where personal details given online have been misused by individuals looking to make a quick buck.

Were you ever a victim of data theft? Did somebody else use your credit card details to buy gizmos online? Has your online identity been misused in any way?

Do you think you have or are posting too many personal details online? Could this backfire?

How much information is too much? Do you have any alternate suggestions for these Web sites?
