'My roomies saw me through'

We asked readers to share their stories about living with roommates. Here, Vishal Kumar, an MBA student in Mumbai, shares his experience of living with roommates:

I have already completed the first year of my MBA programme in Mumbai, but one thing I miss terribly is the fun I had during my engineering days.

We were six of us in two rooms; people use to call it a two-room flat. Though four of us were computer science students and the rest electrical, it was never an issue. We belonged to different cities of UP -- Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Kaimganj -- and were considered a menace to others because of the pranks we'd pull.

They were four fun-filled, unforgettable years I spent. In the third year, the year career orientations began, things started to change. Akshay wanted to pursue coding; Saurabh was already placed with L&T Infotech; Anand, being an electrical engineer was an amazing C programmer; Amit wanted to do everything; and Gaurav was sure of his network administration skills. I was the only one who wanted to do an MBA but they never let me feel left out.

They helped with mock group discussions and even took practice interviews when I needed them. They supported me through it all. The final engineering project was handled completely by the others while I did the least. Whenever I was to go to Delhi for exams or interviews, they made sure I was present in the class register. I got into the 96 percentile in CAT and the credit goes to my roomies, who supported me through thick and thin.

The years flew by and enjoyed every moment -- having dinner together, going out for evening walks around campus, the fierce competition in badminton championships, the number of scraps on orkut, the race to finish NFS underground earliest and a hundred other things.

I joined college two days after I completed my engineering course, completely unaware of how things would turn out for any of us. Surprisingly, I'm in Mumbai with Gaurav and Anand, who are both in IT companies, and Saurabh is in Pune. This happy coincidence allows us the chance to catch up regularly. For Akshay in Noida and Amit at Jamia Millia, I miss you guys!
