You have a question about house rent allowance, medical allowance or even a general tax query.

Here's where we step in with our experts, Relax With Tax.

I was working in Bangalore last year. Now I have shifted to Kerala.

Can I file my tax returns for the last year in Kerala? If so, other than Form 16 and Saral, do I need any other documents?

Also, can 2004-'05 returns be filed now, with a fine of course?

In case you have permanently shifted to Kerala, you would first need to file a particular form. This form is: Request For New PAN Card Or / And Changes Or Correction In PAN Data. You will get it at your local NSDL / UTISL office with your current address.

This would probably take about 15 – 30 days to get updated. Thereafter, you could file your returns at Kerala.

Visit the official web sites of UTI Investor Services Ltd or National Securities Depository Limited to locate the centres. For a detailed question and answer briefing on PAN, visit the FAQ page on the Income Tax website

As a matter of caution, you could also intimate your Bangalore Income Tax ward officer in writing telling him about the change in address and ask him to transfer the records to the relevant ward in Kerala.

An acknowledgement of such letter could be filed along with your return being filed at Kerala.

Where late filing of returns is concerned, please read File your returns by July 31.
