CAT: Sectional cut-offs a problem?

November 23, 2005

Your overall score is good, but sectional cut-offs are low in the Common Admission Test 2005.

Vinod Soni and Rajesh Pandita of ManyaCAT, in a chat with CAT aspirants on November 21 offered this advice: Try for colleges apart from the top ten, where sectional cut-offs are not considered.

Vinod is an architect and has studied management at MDI. He worked with ICI Paints and was stationed in China for three years. His background in design and an affinity for academics led him to join The Princeton Review, where he looks after content design and study methodology.

  • Will you get a call from the IIMs?

Rajesh Pandita is director, ManyaCAT. He has worked with NIIT and Informatics. Before joining the Manya Group, he worked with FIIT JEE. At ManyaCAT he prepares candidates for various B-school entrance examinations, including CAT, XAT, SNAP, etc.

    Here is the transcript:

Part I: Plan of action, post-CAT

  • saswati: My friend is getting around 44.66 (Va : 19 ; Quant : 13.33 ; Di 12.33) .. His chances for IIM & SP JAIN ?

Rajesh: IIMs looks difficult. You need to consider sectional cut-offs. Nirma, LBSIM looks possible.

Vaibhav: How much work experience count in helping to get a call from Institutes.

Rajesh: Depends from institute to institute, but it is always of help in your GD and PI.

raj: hello vinod why ur not ansering my question i am giving proof to please answer the question sir there is something whihc u should take note of CAT2005 there was question in DI which is of similar question which have been asked in TIMES 618 test the question is of the Tennis palyers in original CAT they have given with female players the same question have been asked in Time AIMCAT618 test with male players with same conditions how can it be possible please check thisthere is something which people can make out studnets have got unfair advantage of 8 marks how is it possible that same question can be givenplease answer the question sir there is something whihc u should take note of CAT2005 there was question in DI which is of similar question which have been asked in TIMES 618 test the question is of the Tennis palyers in original CAT they have given with female players the same question have been asked in Time AIMCAT618 test with male players with same conditions how can it be possibl

Vinod: Can you please shorten the question?

sahilgoyal: Hi Vinod, My score is QA - 26.66 DI - 18.66 and VA 12-17.33(depending on various answer keys) total score 57.33 - 62.66 !! Work ex 18 months and graduate from IITG . What are my chances considering the worst and best case (i.e. VA score 12 and 17.33 respectivly)?

Vinod: Your overall score is very good but sectional cut-off is problem. Worst case -- institutes from 10 to 20. Best case, one IIM since there is a possibility that some questions might be nullified. Hence some of the questions could be open to interpretations.

KURUSA: Sir I am girl in the SC category. i have a score of 30. Can I expect a chance in IIMs?

    Rajesh: Improbable.

rana: sir my scores are DI 15, Q 17.5 and V 27.25. What can be my expectation. also, i am an engineer with 4+ years of experience, which college do you sugest?

Rajesh: Any of the top 10 colleges.

raj: anser my question vinod its critical to all cat aspirants vinod there is question in this years CAT2005 which is similar to TIME institutes question in AIMCAT 618(8 marks question) the question in original cat has been asked on female players and in time paer it has been asked with male players please check some thing has been cooked for this CAT2005 they invaribly choose that question for getting unfair advantage.

Vinod: It can be far fetched thinking. But kudos to T.I.M.E if they have asked such questions in their AIM CAT.

shattereddream: wat are my chances as i have attempted in QA-13, DI/DS-15, VA-24 and i think accuracy is 99%. Wat's ur opinion?

Rajesh: If your accuracy turns out to be 100 percent, then you can expect calls from multiple IIMs.

abhineo: Sir, my score DI (10), VA (16.67) and Quants (15) how many IIM calls possible?

Rajesh: Not the IIMs at least.

chandu: SIR, PLZ SUGGEST THE COLLEGES I CAN APPLY WITH A SCORE OF 30.66. I JUST JOINED THE CHAT, SO MISSED THE PREVIOUS REPLIES. PLZZZZZ ANSWER. WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING INTO TAPMI/NIRMA/MICA? PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZZZZZZZZZZ REPLY.

Rajesh: At least not the ones you have mentioned. Your score is low. Best of luck though.

mady: Hi I have 4 yrs work ex.My mocks indicated I have a strong chance this yr. But did badly yesterday. No hopes as per your cutoffs.Got IIT degree too..Will it make sense to try next yr ie 5yrs work ex. Or shall I focus on my job and forget MBA from IIM?!?

Vinod: Still makes sense. Also have you applied for JMET. SP Jain is also a very good institute for you.

Mahadevan: My score is 15 in Quant, 17.33 in DI and 17 in Verbal.. Overall 49.33... where do i stand sir?? also regarding SPJ, MDI and NITIE.

Rajesh: There is the possibility of at least one IIM call, and also the institutes you have mentioned.

rana: sir my scores are DI 15, Q 17.5 and V 27.25. What can be my expectation. also, i am an engineer with 4+ years of experience, which college do you sugest?

Vinod: All colleges you applied to.

komal: WAT WUD BE THE PERCENTILE WITH 20 SCORE....PLEEEEEZ ANSWER THIS IS THE 3RD TIME I'M ASKING.

Rajesh: It's a bell curve and depends purely on the level of the competition. Hard to predict.

catwas: GETTING AROUND 18 in quant 16 in VA and 6 in DI which colleges can i target.

Rajesh : Your sectional cut-offs is a problem. No IIMs, MDI, SP Jain. Try for colleges that do not consider sectional cut-offs.

mahesh: which institute dosnot look for sectional cut-offs

Rajesh: Apart from the top 10 colleges. IMI, FORE, Nirma, KJ Somaiya, TAPMI and similar rung colleges.

Harbir: Sir What is the percentile can i exepect on the score of 29.o6.

    Rajesh: Very difficult to predict.

Rohit: Hello, sir! I'm expecting a score of about 43 (QA: 7, VA: 24, DI: 13). Could I expect a call from SP Jain? I'm inclined towards Advertising, so would MICA be a good bet? I'm sure I can get 55+ if I take the CAT next year but I had taken this year off, so what would you suggest?

Vinod: To be frank, don't take one more year off. Chance of an increase in score are slim.

roshan: hi vinod..... m getting 13.33 in quant, 9 in verbal and 9 in Di.......wer do i have a gud chance of getting a call from?????

Rajesh: Your sectional cut-offs is a problem. Try for colleges apart from the top ten, where sectional cut-offs are not considered.

amitwinsall: cii, research work, score 40,changes in sp jain.

Rajesh: Already answered, please see the transcript.

honey: what is the min score required for snap and nmis?

Rajesh: SNAP and NMAT are separate tests. CAT scores do not apply.

FARDEEN: DON'T U THINK THAT UR CUT-OFFS ARE REALLY VERY HIGH..????

Vinod: No, many students have scored quite good on these tricky questions.

biharichep: sir,I am getting a cut-off of 8 in QA,15 in VA,12 in DI and overall cutoff of 35 in the worst case scenario, and a maximum overall cut-off of 42.DO I HAVE A CHANCE FOR AN IIM CALL??

Rajesh: Your sectional cut-offs will be a problem.

    mahesh: dose FMS have cutoffs

Rajesh: Yes, they do have sectional cut-offs.

Vinod: Thanks , it was a nice chat. For further info you can visit us at our web site or send us an e-mail.
