Is your exam result/ score not good enough to pave your way into a premier institute or the programme of your dreams?
Here's help.
Career counsellors Niyati and Amrita from YoungBuzz tackled questions from Get Ahead readers on how to proceed after Class X and Class XII. Here is the transcript:
Tapasya: I want to know which are the courses available after Class X.
YoungBuzz counsellors: You could go for Arts, Science and Commerce, Home Science, a diploma in Engineering, design courses like fashion design/ interior design, diploma in Home Science or a vocational course in Hotel Management from Mumbai's Foodcraft Institute.
Choose a course based on your area of interest.
Yuvraj: After Class X, how many courses are available and which course should I choose?
YoungBuzz counsellors: You must introspect as to where your area of interest lies.
Next, understand your strengths. For example, are you good in Maths? Then you can pursue a Science/ Maths related career in Insurance, Actuary Sciences, etc.
Get to know your options in terms of study courses and make an action plan. Good luck!
Shreyans: I have got 72 percent in the CBSE board exams. Which stream should I go for?
YoungBuzz counsellors: It depends on your interest, abilities and personality.
Try and meet a career counsellor to help you solve your queries.
Alternatively read up on various careers in Arts, Science and Commerce and then make a choice.
Vaby: I cleared my Class X CBSE exam with 82 percent. Can you please guide me on how to prepare for the IIT entrance exam? I desperately want to get into IIT.
YoungBuzz counsellors: There are many coaching classes like Yukti, PACE, Vidyalankar, Vidyarthi.
You can also do correspondence courses from Brilliant Tutorials.
To get into IIT, you must do your Class XII with Physics, Chemistry, Maths.
You must apply for the IIT Joint Entrance Exam which consists of screening and mains.
Ferheen: I passed ICSE Class X with 66 percent in Maths and 50 percent in Science. What subject should I choose? Can I go for Medical or Engineering?
YoungBuzz counsellors: Hi Ferheen, to get into Medical and Engineering you need a very high percentage and a good score in the entrance exam.
So it is very important to assess your area of interest and aptitude and then choose your stream of study.
Ram: I want to be a software engineer. What subjects should I take after Class X?
YoungBuzz counsellors: You will have to do your Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
Next, you will have to apply for various competitive entrance exams like AIEEE, IIT-JEE and your own state entrance exams.
Richard: I want to go for Biotechnology.
YoungBuzz counsellors: Depending on your interest, there are two ways of getting into Biotechnology.
If you are more inclined towards Biology, do a BSc in Biotech, then an MSc and then go for research.
If you prefer the engineering aspect, you can do a BTech in Biotech from IIT or a BE in Biomedical or Chemical streams.
Yogesh: I have done my Class XII this year and scored an aggregate of 97 percent in PCM.
I want to join the merchant navy. How do I go about doin this?
YoungBuzz counsellors: You have two options -- the navigation branch and the technical branch. For the former, you need to have BSc in Nautical Sciences from the T S Chanakya for which you must give your IIT-JEE entrance.
If you are interested in the technical branch, you need to be an engineer in Mechanical, Electronics or Marine Engineering, which you can do from MERI in Kolkata or Mumbai.

You still have your Class XII to perform well. For now, get admission in a regular college in Arts, Science or Commerce, depending on your interests.
You could also do vocational courses like ITI programmes, IATA, design courses in interior/ fashion/ textile design and computer courses from DOEACC.
You could also explore options at the Foodcraft Institute. Good luck!
