The Communist Party of India-Marxist unit of West Bengal has complained to the Election Commission against the alleged violation of the model code of conduct by the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee during a meeting at Nandigram on March 14.

In a letter to the CEC on March 15, the copy of which was released to the media in Kolkata on Tuesday, CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose said, "Permission was taken neither from the police nor district authorities by Trinamool Congress to hold the public meeting."

"According to the election code, the permission of using loudspeaker in an open space is to be obtained by the party concerned or candidate from the respective authorities. But Trinamool Congress has violated this rule also," Bose said.

"A meeting to launch the election campaign by Trinamool Congress was held at Nandigram and the main speaker of the meeting was Mamata Banerjee along with her party candidates," Bose added.

Refuting the charge, a senior TC leader Partha Chatterjee said there was no violation of the model code of conduct and Mamata had gone to Nandigram on March 14 to attend a meeting in memory of those who died in police firing on that day in 2007.
