Rahul Gandhi's overtures to the Left parties smacks of arrogance and an admission that Congress party may lose the elections, Communist Party of India national secretary D Raja said on Wednesday.

"It showed the arrogance of Congress, which was trying to dictate the political force after the election," Raja told media-persons in Coimbatore.

He was reacting to remarks made by All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, who, keeping the post poll options for alliances open, had expressed confidence that Left would back Manmohan Singh as prime minister and appeared to reach out to key Bharatiya Janata Party allies like Janata Dal-United and Telugu Desam Party.

Despite difference of opinions, Left backed Congress to form the Government in 2004, but withdrew when it failed to adhere to the Common Minimum Programme and pushed the nuclear deal through, he said.

"Let the party introspect. The Congress itself was responsible for such a situation and sought Samajwadi Party's support to protect the government. There is no political honesty for Congress," Raja said.

"It is simple political logic that Left does not wish to extend support, as described by Manmohan Singh or Rahul. The people want change," he said adding that the Left was confident that a non-Congress, non-BJP government would emerge at the Centre and the Left would play an important role in its formation," Raja said.
