A person was on Thursday detained for questioning after he went to newly elected Congress Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam's residence in north-west Mumbai, claiming that he had come to deliver foreign currency, police said.
"One Abdul Sattar, who had gone to Nirupam's residence in Versova on Wednesday night, claimed that he wanted to deliver some cash," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone (IX) Niket Kaushik.
"The police were informed about the incident. He has been taken in for questioning", Kaushik said. The police are presently verifying why Sattar had gone to the MP's residence and if he had a valid forex license to deliver foreign currency, he added.
"It could also be that he went to the wrong house," Kaushik said. Approximately $5,000 were found in possession of Sattar.
Sources at Nirupam's residence said Sattar had allegedly gone to Nirupam's residence at approximately 8 pm on Wednesday and said he had come to deliver the money to the MP's wife.
Since she was unaware about any such decision, Nirupam's wife called up the MP, who told her to immediately inform the police, the source said. "We are investigating the matter," Kaushik said.
