BJP compliments Manmohan Singh

Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed the resignation of Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren on Friday.

Soren was told to resign by the Centre after the Jharkhand assembly was adjourned without holding the confidence vote on Friday as directed by the Supreme Court.

"It is a victory of democracy," said Vijay Kumar Malhotra, BJP parliamentary party spokesperson, told rediff.com minutes after the development.

He complimented the Supreme Court for forcing corrective steps after Soren was sworn in as CM despite the fact that the National Democratic Alliance had a majority.

Arun Jaitley, former minister of law and justice in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, described the move by the government of Jharkhand as "kneeling to the wishes of the people."

Other BJP leaders saw the latest developments as Dr Manmohan Singh's attempt to come out of the shadow of party chief Sonia Gandhi and take action to prevent a clash between the legislature and the judiciary.

"Dr Singh needs to be congratulated," said one of the top BJP leader.

Abhishek Singvi, a noted constitutional expert and the Soren government's counsel in the Supreme Court, also termed the new development as a victory of democracy.

He complimented the Union government for taking steps to avoid a clash between judiciary and legislature.
