BSP will not make dent in Maharashtra: Pawar

The presence of Bahujan Samaj Party candidates in almost all the constituencies in Maharashtra will not make any difference to the assembly poll results, Union Agriculture Minister and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar said on Wednesday.

Speaking to newspersons after casting vote in his hometown Baramati, Pawar said the BSP had contested in almost all the seats in the past four assembly polls, but had not met with much response.

The BSP had played spoilsport for the Congress in Vidarbha in the Lok Sabha polls. The Congress won just one of the 11 Lok Sabha seat in the region.

This time, the BSP is contesting 272 seats – the highest ever for it in the state – appealing for a separate state of Vidarbha.

But Pawar is confident the party will not have an adverse impact on the Congress-NCP claiming that the alliance would cross the 160 mark in the 288-member house.

"In the Lok Sabha polls, the candidates who contested on BSP tickets were all Congress-NCP rebels. It (BSP) did not get much votes on its own," Pawar said.

Pawar said his party has attempted to give chance to newer and younger faces besides women in ticket allotment. "The process (of giving chance to youngsters) has begun in our party," he added.
