A move is afoot by Congress to get fresh letters of support from pre-poll allies and other coalition partners to back a government headed by former Union finance minister Manmohan Singh in the wake of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's refusal to become the prime minister.

Senior Congress leaders have been sent to various allies with the request for fresh letters as the earlier ones were for a government headed by Gandhi, sources said.

The party expects to secure them by afternoon and will then be handed over to President A P J Abdul Kalam, who is expected to invite Singh to form the new government.
