A head constable attached to Karipetti police near Salem in Tamil Nadu severed three fingers of his left hand in a temple on Tuesday night praying for the victory of the AIADMK-BJP combine in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

According to police, Rathnam was alone in the police station as the others had left on a raid. He went to the Ayodyapatam Rama temple on his two-wheeler, shouted slogans praising the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhaghan and then cut off his thumb and middle fingers.
