Attacking the rival Bharatiya Janata Party for the mounting corruption and poverty in the state, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said the latest scandal involving Union minister Dilip Singh Judeo has come as a shock to the nation.

Judeo was caught on camera accepting bribe from a contractor seeking mining rights. Judeo has since resigned from the Union ministry and a CBI investigation has been instituted against him.

Addressing an election rally in Bhillai in Chhattisgarh, Gandhi said the episode was all the more disturbing because Judeo was BJP's chief ministerial candidate in the state.

Reminding people of another scandal where chiefs of some public sector units complained to the vigilance commissioner about attempts by some ministers to extort money from them, Gandhi said the BJP has failed to keep its promise of a clean, transparent administration.

This government, she said, has failed on all fronts. "No section of the people, whether it is youth or farmers or workers, is happy with the NDA government," she said.

Women have been consistently ignored by the ruling coalition and they were not given their due place, Gandhi said, adding "no country can progress if women are neglected."
