January 27, 2009 22:18 IST

Elton Chigumbura hit 79 and claimed two wickets to lead Zimbabwe to a 109-run win over Kenya in the first of a five-match limited-overs series in Mombasa on Tuesday.

Chigumbura smashed his runs off just 38 balls, with seven sixes and three boundaries, as Zimbabwe reached 306-7 for its equal eighth highest limited-overs total.

He then took the opening two wickets to leave Kenya on 16-2 in the sixth over before the home team was bowled out for 197 in the 47th over.

Kenya never recovered from Chigumbura's opening spell, with only Jimmy Kamande (74) putting a semblance of resistance.

Earlier, Vusi Sibanda (77) and Hamilton Masakadza (71) had put on an opening stand of 111 at Mombasa Sports Club Ground.
