Sarwan puts Windies in control

June 07, 2004 11:15 IST

Ramnaresh Sarwan hit a career-best 261 not out to lift West Indies to 559 for four declared on the third day of the second and final Test against Bangladesh in Kingston on Sunday.

Captain Brian Lara had hit a century on Saturday and Sarwan piled on the agony on Sunday. He and Chanderpaul, who was not out on 101, put on 262 in an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand.

Bangladesh, bowled out or 284 in their first innings, closed on 66 for three and still need another 209 runs to make the hosts bat again.

The first Test in St Lucia was drawn amid embarrassment for the home side. It was only the third draw for the Bangladeshis in 29 Tests and they still await their first victory.
