The International Cricket Council has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 has approved Mayank Agarwal as a replacement player for Vijay Shankar in India's squad for the remainder of the tournament.

All-rounder Shankar was ruled out of further participation in the event due to a toe injury sustained during a training session.

The 28-year-old Agarwal, 28, a Karnataka opener, made his Test debut against Australia last year and played two Tests, but has not yet played in the ODI format.

The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before he can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of World Cup 2019 comprises Geoff Allardice (ICC, ETC chairman), Campbell Jamieson (ICC representative), Steve Elworthy (CWC representative), Alan Fordham (host representative), Harsha Bhogle and Kumar Sangakkara (both independent representatives).

"Vijay Shankar sustained a non displaced fracture of the left big toe, which will require a minimum of three weeks to heal," read a statement from India's team management earlier on Monday.

"The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup. The Indian team management has requested the ICC to consider Mayank Agarwal as his replacement," it added.

Originally picked to play at the number four batting spot, Shankar had scores of 15 not out, 29 and 14 in the three matches he played in the ongoing World Cup.

The injury kept him out of the team's only defeat in the tournament, to England by 31 runs, on Monday.

Rishabh Pant batted at number four in the match, having joined the team as replacement for opener Shikhar Dhawan, who suffered a thumb injury and was ruled out.

In fact, Rohit Sharma had mentioned about Shankar's injury but it was presumed to be an old hit that he took at Southampton.

"There is no uncertainty with regard to the number four position. Vijay Shankar was supposed to play but before the game he got hit on the toe by Jasprit (Bumrah) and he wasn't fit. Every team will have these one or two changes happening every now and then," he said after India lost to England.

India will take on Bangladesh at the same venue on Tuesday.
