Day 1
The 25-year-old Phillip Hughes suffered a serious head injury while batting in a domestic cricket match on Tuesday.
Fitted with a ventilator to aid his breathing, Hughes was rushed from the Sydney Cricket Ground in an induced coma, having collapsed to the ground when struck in the helmet by a short-pitched delivery from New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott.
After the blow, Hughes was placed on a motorised stretcher and taken to the boundary where medical staff performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before he was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
The match was called off for the day.
Hughes needed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He remained in critical condition following a surgery on Tuesday and was put in intensive care at St Vincent's hospital.
Day 2
Hughes was still fighting for his life on Wednesday as family and friends kept vigil at his hospital bedside.
He remained in an induced coma after undergoing emergency surgery on Tuesday and experts likened the devastating blow to the trauma experienced by car crash victims.
The 25-year-old underwent further scans on Wednesday morning but medical staff at Sydney's St Vincent's hospital did not disclose the results.
Anthony Cross, who heads the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine, had said that Hughes was fortunate to be given CPR on the stretcher as he came off the field. Since he received good care and treatment immediately, he had the best possible chance of recovery.
He also said that Hughes' treatment would involve doing further scans and monitoring for swelling in the brain.
Day 3
Hughes continued to remain in an induced coma on Thursday after spending a second night at the hospital.
Medical staff reiterated that the 25-year-old batsman remained in critical condition, his condition unchanged.
But the severity of the hit could have caused internal bleeding and the 25-year-old Hughes eventually lost his battle for life on Thursday.
