Stats: INTERESTING numbers from Hyderabad Test, Day 1

Cheteshwar Pujara may manage a smile despite missing out on a Test hundred, in the one-off cricket Test between India and Bangladesh, in Hyderabad, Thursday.

Pujara, on Thursday, eclipsed Chandu Borde's five decades old national record of most runs by an Indian in a single season. Borde had scored 1604 runs in the 1964-65 season that included runs in Tests as well as first-class matches.

1605 Runs scored by Cheteshwar Pujara in Indian first-class season 2016-17 – most any player has ever scored. He went ahead of Chandu Borde’s tally of 1604 (in 1964-65). Among all subcontinent teams, only two players have scored more runs in a domestic first-class season.

5 Number of century stands between Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara in 2016-17 season – most by an Indian pair in a home season. These two had added 112 runs vs New Zealand at Kanpur, 133 also vs New Zealand at Kanpur (in second innings), 209 vs England at Rajkot, 107 vs England at Wankhede....and 178 vs Bangladesh – all for second wicket.

7 Number of Test teams Virat Kohli has played against – also the number of teams he has scored a hundred against. Virat completed the set today with the hundred against Bangladesh. He is yet to play against Pakistan and Zimbabwe.  Virat became sixth Indian to score a hundred against seven countries. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar have scored a hundred against ALL 9 Test playing countries.  Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag- likewise Virat- has scored a hundred against seven countries.

9 Number of hundreds Virat has scored as captain – joint second-most by an Indian while leading the side, along with Mohammad Azharuddin. Now only Sunil Gavaskar – 11 – has scored more hundreds as captain for India.

1075 Runs scored by Virat in the 2016-17 season – second highest for any Indian in a home season after Virender Sehwag’s 1105 runs in 2004-05. Apart from these two, only Sunil Gavaskar has aggregated 1000 runs in a home season for India – 1027 runs in 1979-80.

Virat’s 1075 runs are also the most by any player in a home season as captain in Test cricket. The previous record was held by Graham Gooch with 1058 runs (in 1990 season). 

5 Number of times Virat has scored a hundred on the opening day of a Test. Only Virender Sehwag (10), Sunil Gavaskar (9), Sachin Tendulkar (8) and Rahul Dravid (8) have done so more often than Virat for India.

97 Number of Tests after which Bangladesh finally played a Test on Indian soil – 16 years 3 months after making their Test debut, which was against India!

3 Number of Bangladesh bowlers to take a wicket in the first over of a Test. Taskin Ahmed joined Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain. This was the fifth such instance for Bangladesh, with Mortaza doing so on three occasions. 

356 Runs scored by India – most they have scored on the opening day of a Test against Bangladesh. The previous record was 334 (for 2) at Chittagong in 2004-05.
