Several senior players, including Sanath Jayasuriya, Lasith Malinga, Chamara Kapugedera and Ajantha Mendis, were left out as selectors looked to the future.
Former captain Mahela Jayawardene, spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, all-rounder Angelo Mathews and fast bowler Dilhara Fernando were not available due to injury.
Middle order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, 20, was picked for the first time while 30-year-old batsman Chamara Silva and leg spinner Malinga Bandara were recalled.
Left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara also made a return to the side after a shoulder injury.
All-rounder Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, fast bowler Suranga Lakmal and off spinner Suraj Randiv, all replacements on Sri Lanka's recent tour to India, were retained.
