Australia defeated West Indies by a massive 177 runs to win the second Test match in Melbourne and claim the series 2-0.

West Indies' captain Jason Holder and 'keeper Denesh Ramadin put on stiff resistance -- cracking half-centuries and scripting a 100-run partnership after tea -- to delay the inevitable.

Australia's all-rounder Mitch Marsh eventually broke the stand and ended with figures of 4 for 61.

Chasing 460 to win, West Indies folded up for 282.

West Indies' Jerome Taylor, superbly caught by James Pattinson, was the last victim to fall in the penultimate over of the day and seal the issue.

Nathan Lyon was Man-of-the-match after picking seven wickets in the match.

West Indies were left staring at another defeat after losing three wickets in the second session to reach 146 for 4 at tea on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Denesh Ramdin (19) and Jermaine Blackwood (16) were at the crease at the break.

Even though Darren Bravo and opener Rajendra Chandrika batted doggedly after lunch, there was no stopping the Australian pacers as Peter Siddle, Mitch Marsh and James Pattinson got into the act.

Bravo (21 off 61) batted stoically for over 22 overs before falling victim to a peach by Siddle – caught behind by Peter Neville.

Five overs later, Chandrika was the next to go leg before by Pattinson.

All-rounder Marlon Samuels dug in for a bit before he was caught behind by Neville off the bowling of Marsh.

’Keeper Ramdin (19) swung his bat and hit three boundaries to score run-a-ball at tea.

Earlier, the West Indies top order held firm after the loss of opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite to push the tourists to 64 for one at lunch, still 396 runs adrift of their victory target.

Australia captain Steve Smith declared his team's second innings closed at 179-3 before the start of play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, ensuring West Indies would need to set a record in chasing down an imposing 460 runs.

Opener Chandrika was 17 not out from 93 balls, with Darren Bravo on 14 at the break.

Already 1-0 down in the three-match series after losing the Hobart opener, West Indies started their daunting task positively, with Brathwaite scoring at nearly a run a ball.

With the Australian pacemen deriving little from the pitch, spinner Nathan Lyon was introduced early and made the breakthrough in his third over when Brathwaite's weak cut shot and was well caught at slip by Smith for a rapid 31.

Australia's no-ball dramas on day three returned to haunt paceman Josh Hazlewood late in the session.

Hazlewood had Darren Bravo caught behind for 12 on the first ball of the last over before lunch, but a TV replay showed the bowler had over-stepped his crease.

The no-ball was the third to deny Australia wickets in the match, with James Pattinson reprieving fellow paceman Carlos Brathwaite twice on day three, allowing the Barbadian to score 59 on debut.
