August 28, 2007 12:43 IST

Former South African Test batsman Roy Mclean died in Johannesburg on Monday after a prolonged illness at the age of 77.

Mclean played 40 Test matches, at an average of just over 30. He is best remembered for a match-winning unbeaten 76 against Australia in 1955.

Following his success in South Africa's test tour to England in 1960, he was named Wisden's Cricketer of the Year in 1961.

McLean was also a useful rugby player, and is credited with a drop goal that gave his club side Natal victory over the touring Australians in 1953.

He leaves behind his 51-year-old wife, Barbara, two daughters and six grandchildren.
