Readers responses to: Will India find the right coach?
Sant Surya:
India needs a coach who can better where Wright has left. To take the reins and improve the performance further.
But again by appointing a committee of mix bags - politician, umpire, cricketer and commentators - we are showing how difficult this job of picking up the right coach of India is.
Other teams such as Bangladesh, Srilanka, South Africa have gone and got this job done without much ado. By making this process so complicated and trying to extract so much media and public attention, we are putting too much pressure on future coach before we have even announced one.
Anyway - this is how India handles matter of importance in any field.
We need a tough coach. One who looks tough, acts tough and talks tough.
In this we need not look any further than an Australian. They command respect in world of sports because of this. They are straight talking people. They are knowledgeable and play their game with a lot of passion. So as an Australian who do we have ? Dean Jones, Greg Chappell and Tom Moody.
This simplifies the choice making.
Greg should be out of the equation. If we didn't pick him in 2000 there is no need to go back to that again. Tom Moody - don't think he achieved much as a player to command any respect from our Big Fives. This leaves Dean Jones.
A young, handsome, energetic, charismatic, Aussie. A man who played hard and knows all aspects of the game. A man who being part of the commentary team already knows the flaws in the Indian team.
A man with fresh ideas who is non-fearing, outspoken and unfazed by the Big five. A man who knows how to kick the butt and real hard when required. And doesn't our team need that anyway.

I am sure will and Sandip patil is ideal person to take charge as India's new coach. He is great cricketer and strong person. Purely dedicated to cricket has good success in Domestic and International cricket in coaching and a good human being.
I am big fan of him, I use to see his game in Shivaji Park ground in our neighbourhood. All the best for him to take the post.

Hi,
May be right or wrong . I don't agree with people who themselves are in the media glare to become a coach. Why was Greg chappel included in first place.Agreed Mr.Sandeep patil has proved himself but can he handle Team India still to be seen what he can do in a second stint. If he is given a longer run this time around. There are lot better people to coach India then the four people who have been short listed. The running of BCCI everybody knows has become worst than a market place . There is no firm voice or clarity. I agree with everybody that Mr. John Wright's opinion should have been taken as he was one of the successful coach India has had. And I just pray that they are able to find a person up to John Wright's capability this time around or else a disaster is awaiting us seeing what happened when the captain started not to listen to the coach in last few days.
Regards
Cricket fan.

I bet on Amarnath that he will make difference among others...
But lets wait and see who will wear the hat finally!!!
------
Abhinav:
Even one player from current team should have been included in the panel, preferably Dravid or Sachin.
------
Ramadas:
Players are contracted to BCCI which means they get paid as per the contract. Now where is the controlling process in place? How is this contract managed? Where is the plan to manage this contract? What is the performance criteria? What is the acceptance criteria? If player doesn't perform for continuously in as many as 4,5,6, 7 matches - still the contract is valid? Isn't it a great contact which has no measuring process of day to day performance of the players.
I pray God to take this politics far away from 'Cricket India' . Why is this Dalmiya is always one or the other way involved with BCCI although he is not officially hold any position?
Because of Dalmiya, Ganguly is not even bothered about his place in the team because he knows he has the blessing of this great Damliya. As long as BCCI in particular Selection Panel headed by real professional and experienced cricketers really deserving candidates can never make in to the team.
If a players is making any mistake on the field Coach should have the guts to tell it right on his face and the player should be given the deadline to correct and produce the results. Selection Panel should be acting like a senior management - giving all the help it needs to team management and at the same time tight and stubborn deadlines. Afterall everyone gets paid - which means everyone should perform for the standards set for.
Finally, Mr. Kiran More is telling he doesn't consider domestic performance of a player in to account to make his selection for the team India. Then what does he consider? Very strange comment from the likes of Kiran More is so much surprising. If people with this mind-set heading selection panel Majumdars, Shekhars and Joshis just need to be dreaming all the time.

This mail is addressed to all Gentlemen running the GREAT INDIAN CRICKET SHOW.
Let me put my points :
1) The search for coach is on,why the search is on because coach is responsible for Team's performance, but who is responsible for the Bunch Of Jokers running the Mega Indian Cricket show ?????
2) They knew term for Mr John Bhai was to get over, then were was their backup arrangement to hire new one,They have to be woken up dear followers of Indian cricket. Even a child knows, that if something is going to get over in house,it has to be bought before the earlier lot gets over.
3) The new coach will be hired, and whats the gestation time he going to have with THE INDIAN CRICKET TEAM (GUYS BE READY FOR THE EXCUSE after the first tour of August is over (a) FROM NEW COACH " As the time given to me was so short so the boys could not understand what i meant "
(b)FROM OUR OLD CRICKET TEAM CAPTAIN: " As the coach is new it will take some time to understand him "
(c) FROM BCCI SECRETARY: "As both the coach and team got short time together thats why they could not understand what each other wanted"
WELL GUYS THIS IS SHORT TRAILOR OF WHATS TO COME.

Dear Rediff:
The answer is a resounding no. My candidate would have been Dean Jones. I saw his career unfold. He was aggressive at number 3 even if an early wicket fell. To me the hallmark of a great cricketer unlike wearing the opposition down with boring play as a few of our current 'stars' do.
Not too say he was mindless in mayhem; he was doggedly tenacious as well; recount Madras double century?
A fantastic fielder.
And he will kick the lazy behinds in our current team out of their comfort zones; hear him commentate and you will know what type of style I am talking about; plain all out aggression. Somebody who can stand up and say Ganguly is a detriment, Kaif is overrated and Tendulkar cannot cruise happily into blissful retirement. Step up to the plate or you are out.
None of the short-listed has all the above attributes.
Greg Chappell : Great player; more talented than Dean Jones, Aussie too boot but just too old and self-serving for me.
Mohinder Amarnath :Aggressive and gutsy like Dean Jones but just not nearly as talented as Deano. But he would be my choice amongst the short-listed as he was a doer, fighter and not afraid to put people in their place as we all know.
Tom Moody - He was an average cricketer. What India needs is a top-calibre past-cricketer as coach. Our players are already amongst best but we need somebody who make them outstanding. A coach who has not much of an international record can hardly draw from experience in adversity. And you need to do that with some of the egotistical heads in our present team. He will be another John Wright. JW made our team better but not the best as he just did not have the attitude of a winner, he exhausted his quiver and topped out. Our debacles in the past year will show how we have retrogressed. You have to draw from rich experience. Only a winner can do that and Tom Moody was not one in his time.
Sandeep Patil - Overrated. His coaching experience reads more like a young mother's care; teaching babies the basics; who cares if you taught minnows like Kenya and Oman; so now we are comparing ourselves to these countries? That has to be an all-time low. Our players are already running but they are not running fast enough.
I was disappointed to see Dean Jones omitted from the short-list.
Thanks

Sudarshan:
Hi I have been following these comments and suggestions made by lots of readers of rediff.com my own suggestion is slightly different. I don't think we need to look really far away for a coach.
For starters, lets look at statistics between India and Pakistan and its clear that they have won more times against us home and away and also the fact of matter is that they are a phyrric team which performs like champions one day and losers the very next.
The point I am trying to make is very simple. Lets look for a coach from Pakistan and Initkhab Alam is a really good bet to begin with. He is aggressive, understands the Indian psyche and politics that governs cricket (therefore wont complain when a specific player gets left out or is picked), most importantly he has worked with great geniouses and absolutely mediocre players and got them to perform and deliver as a team.
What we really need is along with Alam Sahab a couple of assistant coaches to focus of fielding, fast bowling and lower middle order batting.
I personally feel this would be a good option for the long term and in the short term get the team a coach immediately.
Thanks and Regards

KV:
There is no fun in taking or selecting a good coach and having poor selection policy , why Gaunguly should play such a long inning should have been removed long back . The reason for Australia being number one is this , Steve was removed for his poor performance as a player and as a captain he was way ahead of Ganguly .
Why we can not consider Ganguly as our Coach , he might as well be very handy for this assignment because of shear skills in the area of managing and motivating people .
Selectors should have a relook on Ramesh ,Sriram ,Raydu .Why they should wed with Yuwaraj just because his father has palyed test cricket , due to this Kaif was not given his dues and indian cricket may have to rue for this mistake .let us not go on appreciating one odd knock of Yuvaraj . He is no good to play as opener and even as middle order batsman. Can we compare with Michel Bevan ???? No he is miles ahead because of his responsible innings at every crucial stage.

Suresh:
Hi..
My advice to the panel is to do bit different to get different results in future (winning 2007 world cup)
ie Dont just select the coach, do get a bowling coach in addition to coach that will sure help our bowlers to get their form back and to put them in next level.
BCCI is financially husky and easily affordable to have a bowling coach. This is a investment to push the indian team to top of the ICC table. Dont follow other countries in having only one coach.

Vaibhav V Naik:
Dear Rediff,
The panel selected for selecting the Cricket coach for India is absolutely capable of selecting the right coachj for India.
Despite they are not playing the game but they are very much close to it still.
The coach should be former player, should have shown strong mental balance in pressure situation in his cricket career and also agressive in approach towards the game. And all these qualities are in only one man "Prof. Deano" (Dean Jones)
