Ranji Trophy round-up: Assam take first innings lead against Karnataka

Pallavkumar Das (55) and Amit Verma (57) came up with twin fifties as Assam grabbed a crucial first innings lead over defending champions Karnataka after posting 194 all out on the second day of their Group A Ranji Trophy match in Guwahati.

Overnight batsmen Pallavkumar and Gokul Sharma (30) forged a crucial 82-run stand, while Arun Karthik and Verma added 42 runs for the fourth wicket to help Assam surpass Karnataka's first innings total of 187 all out at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

At the draw of stumps, Karnataka had reached 77 for no loss with opening batsmen R Samarth (33) and MA Agarwal (44) at the crease.

Among Karnataka bowlers, Vinay Kumar (2/20), S Gopal (2/43) and KK Nair (2/11) snapped two wickets each, while H S Sharath, Jagadeesha Suchith and R Samarth picked one each.

Resuming at overnight score of 21 for one, Pallavkumar and Sharma continued their good work and stayed on the crease for more than 20 overs today before the latter was dismissed by Suchith in the 33rd over.

One over later, Pallavkumar was sent back to the hut by Nair, who trapped him in front of wicket.

New man Arun then joined hands with Verma and took Assam beyond the 100-run mark but Vinay Kumar dismissed the former to reduce Assam to 133-4.

The slide started after that as none of the batsmen could reach double figures and Verma was left stranded at the other end.

In the 78th over, Verma was also back in the pavilion when he was dismissed by S Gopal.

Karnataka: 187 all out in 75.2 overs and 77 for no loss in 21 overs (Ravikumar Samarth 33 batting; Mayank Agarwal 44 batting).

Assam 1st Innings: 194 all out in 78.5 overs (Pallavkumar Das 55, Amit Verma 57; R Vinay Kumar 2/20, Shreyas Gopal 2/43, Karun Nair 2/11).

Bhatt six-wicket haul takes Baroda on verge of victory

Chennai: Left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt scalped six wickets on a turning wicket as Baroda placed themselves on course for a comfortable victory against hosts Tamil Nadu in their Group B Ranji Trophy match.

Bhatt's brilliant figures of 6/58 helped Baroda shot Tamil Nadu out for 155 in 59.4 overs in their second innings, leaving the visiting side 122 runs to score in their second innings to win the match at the M A Chidambaram Stadium.

Bhatt has taken 10 wickets in total in the match as he had scalped four in Tamil Nadu first innings.

At stumps, Baroda were four for no loss from two overs, needing another 117 runs to win the match with all their second innings wicket in hand.

Resuming at their overnight score of 33 for 1, Baroda opener Kedar Devdhar (40, 76b, 4x4) and captain Aditya Waghmode (21, 58b, 2x4) batted cautiously and stitched 42 runs between them before the latter was caught at short leg by Baba Aparajith off Chandrasekar.

After that, Yusuf Pathan was the lone batsman who played with aggression against the spinners in particular for his 43 ball 41 (2x4, 2x6) while wickets fell at the other end.

Finally, Baroda could muster 159 all out for a first innings lead of 34 runs.

Later, when Tamil Nadu commenced their second essay, the story was the same like their first innings as captain and left-handed batsman, Abhinav Mukund was dismissed for a duck when he was brilliantly caught by Deepak Hooda at mid wicket of the bowling of left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh.

Opener Bharath Shankar (15) and Baba Aparajith took the score to 49 for 2 but soon Aparajith too left the middle, caught by wicket keeper Pinal shah of the bowling of Bhatt for 39 (4x4, 1x6) and the hosts were 56 for 3.

With only the brothers Aparajith (39) and Indrajith contributing 74 runs, Tamil Nadu were dismissed for 155 in heir second innings.

Tamil Nadu: 125 and 155 all out in 59.4 overs (Baba Aparajith 39; Bhargav Bhatt 6/58).

Baroda: 159 all out in 49.2 overs (Yusuf Pathan 41; Rahil Shah 4/38, D T Chandrasekar 4/50).

Haryana suffer late order collapse on curtailed Day 2

Pune: Haryana lost their last four wickets for only four runs as only 19.1 overs of play was possible due to inclement weather on the second day of their Ranji Trophy opening group league encounter against Maharashtra. 

Haryana were all-out in their first innings 335 after starting the day at 303 for six. At stumps, Maharashtra were 7 for no loss in three overs. 

While Virender Sehwag hogged the limelight on the first day with his strokefilled 92, the second day was all about bad weather conditions. 

Himanshu Rana (157) started the day with Jayant Yadav (29) as the duo took the score to 331 having added 87 runs for the seventh wicket. 

Rana was unfortunately run-out having hit 21 boundaries in 271 balls in a knock that was shade under seven hours. 

Disaster struck haryana as from 331 for six, they slumped to 331 for nine before being bowled out for 335.

Ricky Bhui shines for Andhra against Mumbai

Vizianagaram: Middle-order batsman Ricky Bhui completed his century as Andra Pradesh reached 213 for four in their first innings against Mumbai on a rain-curtailed second day of the Ranji Trophy Group B match.

On a day when only 26 overs could be played, Andra added another 43 runs losing two wickets to their overnight score of 170-2 at Dr PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex.

Overnight batsmen Bhui (103) and Mohammad Kaif (89) added another 21 runs today before the former was dismissed by Balwinder Sandhu in the 92nd over.

AG Pradeep (0) also was sent packing by Sandhu in the 94th over after he disturbed his stumps.

At the draw of stumps, Kaif and No. 6 batsman K Ashwin Hebbar (8) were at the crease.

Andhra 1st innings: 213 for 4 in 106 overs (R Bhui 103, M Kaif 89; BS Sandhu 3/45).

Youngsters Saif, Sarfaraz hit big tons as UP dominate

Moradabad: Playing in his second first-class game, young Mohammad Saif missed out on a double century by two runs, while another youngster Sarfaraz Khan smashed 155 off 164 balls as Uttar Pradesh posted a mammoth 656/5 in their Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh.

At stumps on day 2, the hosts rode on 19-year-old Saif's 198 off 287 balls, and Sarfaraz's blazing knock to pile up a huge total after batting 180 overs at the Teerthanker Mahaveer University Ground.

Spinner Jalaj S Saxena picked up three wickets at the cost of conceding 190 runs, the figures giving ample indication of how difficult was it for the bowlers.

UP had started the day on 260 for two.

Overnight batting on 110, Almas Shaukat got out after making 128, even as Saif batted on and in the company of Sarfaraz, who is barely 17, added 287 runs for the fourth wicket.

Saif found the fence 18 times and cleared it once, while Sarfaraz struck 15 boundaries and four sixes. 

Jadeja puts Saurashtra in driver's seat

Rajkot: Ravindra Jadeja snared up six wickets as Saurashtra dismissed Tripura for 103 to enforce a follow on at stumps on day two of the Group C match in the Ranji Trophy.

Tripura were struggling in their second innings too, ending the day at 11 for three with Jadeja picking up two wickets to take his match haul to eight.

Jadeja, out of the Indian team, was menacing with his left-arm spin after scoring a solid 91 on day one.

Saurashtra, resuming the day at 270 for six, added 47 runs to their first innings total to post 307.

Sheldon Jackson, who was batting on 82 overnight, was dismissed by Tushar Saha three runs short of a hundred.

Saurashtra 307 in 106 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 91, Sheldon Jackson 97, Abhijit Dey 4/118, Tushar Saha 4/72).

Tripura 103 in 59.1 overs (Arindam Das 24, Ravindra Jadeja 6/27) and 11/3 in 11 overs (Abhijit Dey 3 not out; Jadeja 2/4).
