Ranji: Mumbai back on top with easy win over Maharashtra

Defending champions Mumbai got their Ranji Trophy campaign back on track with an emphatic nine-wicket win over Maharashtra in their second Group A league game in Mumbai on Monday, offsetting the heavy loss to Baroda in the opening game.

Needing 74 to win, Mumbai went into the final day at 13 for no loss.

While Ayush Mhatre's (15) dismissal robbed them off a bonus point, Prithvi Shaw (39 not out off 36 balls) and Hardik Tamore (21 not out off 26 balls) earned six points for the team in just 13.3 overs.

This was after the 42-time champions lost to Baroda by 84 runs in the opening Ranji Trophy fixture but in the second match at the BKC ground, Mumbai excelled in all departments of the game.

The match was won and lost on the first day itself when Mumbai bowled out Maharashtra for 126 in their first innings and then rode on 17-year-old Mhatre's smashing 176 and Shreyas Iyer's belligerent 142 to score 441.

While Maharashtra fared much better in the second innings with centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and veteran Ankit Bawne, apart from a 98 from former India U-19 batter Sachin Dhas, the damage was already done.

In Delhi, young off-spinner Mahesh Pithiya returned career-best match haul of 9/169, including six second innings wickets, as Baroda emerged winners by 65 runs against Services.

Set a challenging target of 341, Services were all out for 275 in their second innings with Pithiya doing the star turn. Pithiya was ably assisted by 19-year-old seamer Raj Limbani (3/47).

For Services, Arjun Sharma tops-scored with an unbeaten 79 while Rajat Paliwal and Lovekesh Bansal chipped in with 47 and 39 respectively.

This was Baroda's second straight win of the season, having shocked Mumbai by 84 runs in the opener.

In Cuttack: Jammu and Kashmir 270 and 270/7 declared in 73.2 overs (Abdul Samad not out 108, Shubham Khajuria 43, Shubham Pundir 40; Suryakant Pradhan 3/46) vs Odisha 272 and (Target 269) 112/8 in 80.4 overs (Sandeep Pattnaik 55; Umar Nazir Mir 2/8, Sahil Lotra 2/10, Shubham Khajuria 2/15, Abid Mushtaq 2/38).

Delhi deny TN outright win in Group D

Opener Sanat Sangwan hit a patient 83 as Delhi managed to deny Tamil Nadu an outright win and earn a point from their Ranji Trophy Group D match in New Delhi on Monday.

Resuming their first innings at 264 for 8, Delhi lost their remaining two wickets for the addition of just two runs with centurion Yash Dhull (105 not out) remaining stranded at the other end.

Following on, Delhi lost Dhull early but Sangwan produced a gritty performance with the bat, scoring his runs off 231 balls with the help of 12 boundaries.

He received good support from skipper Himmat Singh (36) and Jonty Sidhu (23) before Delhi survived some anxious moments to finish the final day at 193 for 8 in 83 overs.

India International Washington Sundar (3/45), Sonu Yadav (2/37) and Ajith Ram (2/52) were the wicket-takers for Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu got three points from the match.

In Guwahati, Chandigarh defeated Assam by nine wickets to register full points from the match.

Resuming at overnight 144 for 7, Assam's second innings folded for 185, setting a 78-run target for Chandigarh, which the visitors overhauled in 17.2 overs. Manan Vohra remaining unbeaten on 51 off 50 balls.

Another Group D match between Jharkhand and Railways in Ahmedabad ended in a draw.

But Jharkhand secured three points from the tie by virtue of first innings lead after bowling out Railways for 414 in reply to their 417.

In Rajkot, the match between Chhatisgarh and Saurashtra ended in a draw but the visitors grabbed three points.

Replying to Chhatisgarh's 578 for 7 declared, India discard Cheteshwar Pujara made 234 off 383 balls while Arpit Vasavada (73) and Sheldon Jackson (62) struck a half-century each as Saurashtra scored 478 for 8 on the final day.

Resuming on overnight 75, Pujara decorated his knock with 25 boundaries and one six.

Shashank Singh (3/43) picked up three wickets for Chhatisgarh.

Nagwaswalla stars in Gujarat's one wicket win over Andhra

Left-arm pacer Arzan Nagwaswalla shone with a four-wicket haul as Gujarat pulled off a thrilling one wicket-win over Andhra on day four of their Ranji Trophy Group B fixture in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Resuming at an overnight 203 for four, Andhra managed to score 297 in their second innings after following on, setting a 144-run target for the home team.

Andhra left-arm spinner Lalith Mohan made life difficult for Gujarat in what turned out to be a tricky run chase. His seven wicket haul reduced Gujarat to 131/9 before Nagwaswalla (16 not out off 22) and Priyajitsin Jadeja (1 not out) got their side over the line.

After a stellar effort with the ball, Nagwaswalla was able to deliver with the bat under extreme pressure. Gujarat got six points for the win while Andhra drew a blank.

Earlier, K S Bharat (42) pushed Andhra's total close to 300 with Nitiesh Reddy (34) and Hanuma Vihari (32) also chipping in.

Mantri comes to rescue as MP deny Punjab

Punjab came close to registering an outright win before opener Himanshu Mantri came in their way with his dogged resistance and helped Madhya Pradesh escape with a draw in their Ranji Trophy Group C match in Mullanpur, Punjab, on Monday.

Having set MP an imposing target of 400 in the fourth innings, Punjab had the visitors reeling at 121 for eight but Mantri, in the company of Avesh Khan, denied the hosts full points.

Mantri made 41, but what was more important from MP's point of view was that he consumed 225 balls for those runs, while number 10 Avesh saw off 60 balls to score 10 runs.

In the end, MP finished their second innings at 146 for eight. In between, Harpreet Singh made 35 off 40 balls.

Gurnoor Brar (3/60), Arshdeep Singh (2/28), Sukhwinder Singh (2/19) and Mayank Markande (1/13) were the wicket-takers for Punjab.

Starting the day on 265 for three, Punjab declared their second innings at 329 for six with Jaskaranvir Singh Paul making 116 and Anmolpreet Singh 72.

At Lucknow, Haryana got three points on the basis of taking the first-innings lead after their match against Uttar Pradesh ended in a draw.

Uttar Pradesh ended the elite group game with a solitary point.

Resuming the day on overnight 267 for six, UP were all out for 367 in reply to Haryana's big first innings total of 453, the home team finishing with a much better total than what they would have imagined after they sipped to 279 for nine.

UP lost Shivam Sharma (15) on the first ball of final day's play and then saw in-form centurion Aryan Juyal (119) getting dismissed for the addition of just two runs to the team total.

Vipraj Nigam also failed to do anything of note with the willow as Haryana looked to warp up UP's first innings.

However, Yash Dayal (41 not out) and Ankit Rajpoot (40) joined forces to frustrate the Haryana bowlers with an entertaining stand of 85 for the last wicket.

Dayal hit three sixes and as many fours in his breezy knock, while Rajpoot struck five boundaries and a maximum during his stay in the middle.

Off-spinner Jayant Yadav was the most successful bowler for Haryana, returning with figures of 4/102, while there were two wickets apiece for Harshal Patel, Sumit KUmar and Aman Kumar.

Seasoned India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal failed to enter his name in the wicket's column and conceded 75 runs in his 13 overs.

In their second innings, Haryana were 72 for three when the match ended.
