Irfan Pathan and Aditya Waghmode hit contrasting centuries as Baroda piled up an impressive 308 for 4 against Karnataka on Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy Group B match at Moti Bagh stadium, in Vadodara, on Friday.
The home side was in a spot of bother after being put in to bat, having lost four wickets for 88 runs at one stage, but Pathan and opener Waghmode dug in and rescued the side.
Pathan was more aggressive of the two unbeaten batsmen at the end of the day. The left-handed all-rounder needed 155 balls for his 105-run knock, that was studded with 16 boundaries and four sixes.
Waghmode's innings, though, was a sedate one as he took 262 balls for his 121, which contained 16 fours and two sixes.
The two-left handers have put on a 220-runs for the unbroken fifth-wicket stand so far.
R Vinay Kumar provided Karnataka a good start by trapping Kedar Devdhar (2) in the ninth over of the day. Abhimanyu Chauhan (6) met the same fate off the bowling of Stuart Binny.
Ambati Rayudu (14) also did not last long, a victim of KP Apanna, leaving the side reeling at 40 for three.
Baroda skipper Yusuf Pathan (24) did not help his side much as he became Binny's second victim.
However, Waghmode held one end strongly and found an able partner in Pathan. Together they steered the side to a good position.
Brief scores:
Baroda: 308 for 4 in 90 overs. (Aditya Waghmode 121 batting, Irfan Pathan 105 batting; S Binny 2-30).
