Delhi Capitals got the better of SunRisers Hyderabad via the Super Over to register their fourth victory in the Indian Premier League, in Chennai, on Sunday.
Axar Patel delivered a superb deciding over, restricting the SunRisers, who went in with David Warner and Kane Williamson, to just 7 runs.
In reply, Delhi Capitals got to the target easily. They got three leg byes from the over, and Rishabh Pant hit a four and Dhawan a single off Rashid Khan to seal the contest.
Electing to bat, Delhi Capitals put up 159 for 4, opener Prithvi Shaw scoring 53 off 39 balls and skipper Rishabh Pant 37 off 27.
Steve Smith was unbeaten on 34 off 25 balls as SunRisers Hyderabad pacer Siddarth Kaul took 2 for 31 in his four overs.
In reply, the SunRisers Kane failed to make it count in the death overs despite Williamson's gutsy unbeaten 66 off 51 balls.
Warner and Bairstow got the SunRisers innings underway, while Kagiso Rabada opened the bowling for Delhi. Just five runs came off the first over.
Delhi introduced Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack at the other end for the second over and were almost rewarded for the decision. The right-arm off-spinner missed out on the wicket of Bairstow, as Hetmyer has put down a chance at the deep square leg fence.
Marcus Stoinis replaced Rabada for the third over and Bairstow launched into him immediately, hitting a four and six as 12 runs came from it.
The SunRisers had put up 22 without loss after three overs before Warner was run out to a Rabada-Pant relay dismissal for 6 off 8 balls off the second delivery of the fourth over.
Bairstow sent a delivery from Ashwin towards cover-point and set off for the single. Rabada fielded and sent a perfect throw to the stumps, where Pant did the needful, catching Warner well short of the crease. SunRisers were 28 for 1 in the third over.
Bairstow scored 38 off 18 balls and was looking good for more but was caught by Shikhar Dhawan off Avesh Khan at mid-on. The SunRisers were 56-2 in the sixth over.
Kane Williamson came in a took up the responsibility of building the innings. He scored 31 off 24 balls to take SunRisers to 80 for 2 after ten overs.
Avesh Khan returned to the attack for his second over and ended a 28-run partnership between Williamson and Virat Singh, Marcus Stoinis catching the latter at mid-wicket.
SunRisers were 88-3 after 12 overs.
Williamson and Kedar Jadhav then put on 20 runs for the fourth wicket before the wily Amit Mishra had Jadhav stumped by Pant in the 15th over. It was Mishra's 28th victim by stumping in IPL history, the most by any bowler.
Williamson brought up his 50 in the 16th over, but the SunRisers continued to slump, as Abhishek Sharma was out leg before wicket to Axar Patel to the first ball of the 17th.
Axar then trapped Rashid Khan lbw with his next delivery, the batsman going for the reverse hit and missing.
Vijay Shankar did well to defend the next ball and deny the India spinner a hat-trick.
Wtith 28 runs needed from 12 balls SunRisers' hopes were in Williamson and Vijay Shankar's hands. However, Shankar disappointed. He went for a big shot and was bowled by Avesh Khan, who picked his third wicket. SRH were 137-7 after three deliveries in the 19th over
Jagadeesha Suchith, the new batsman in, hit Avesh for a four off the first ball he faced and then a huge six off the last delivery of the over. 12 runs came off the penultimate over, leaving SRH 16 to get from the last six balls, with Williamson on strike.
Rabada bowled a wide off the first delivery. The New Zealander hit the free-hit for four. A single off the second took SRH to 150.
Suchith then hit a six to deep mid-wicket off the third delivery to take SRH to 157.
With three needed from the last two balls, Williamson got just one, leaving it to Suchit to get the winning runs. Suchit got just one to tie the scores. Williamson was 66 not out off 51 balls.
In the Super Over, Axar Patel restricted SRH, who went in with Warner and Williamson, got just 7. In reply, Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan got the required runs, getting the winning run off bye off the last ball from Rashid Khan.
Earlier, Prithvi Shaw hit a sparkling fifty but Delhi Capitals frittered away a bright start and had to settle for 159 for 4.
Openers Shaw (53) and Shikhar Dhawan (28) set up a perfect platform for Delhi with an 81-run stand before the SunRisers Hyderabad bowlers changed the course of the innings.
Fast bowler Siddarth Kaul was the best of them, picking two wickets for 31 runs, while spinners Rashid Khan (1-31 in 4 overs) and Jagadeesha Suchith (0-21) chipped in with with tight spells to restrict Delhi.
Skipper Rishabh Pant (37) and Steve Smith (34 not out) raised a 58-run stand for the fourth wicket to ensure a fighting total after electing to bat.
Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl. They brought in Axar Patel for Lalit Yadav, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar was replaced by Jagadeesha Suchith in the Hyderabad eleven.
Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan opened the batting for Delhi while Khaleel Ahmed bowled the first over for SunRisers.
The pacer started with a short and wide delivery, which Shaw crashed through the covers for a four. The batsman hit the next two balls for boundaries to garner 12 runs off the first over.
Shaw raced to 39 off 23 balls as 51 runs came from the first six overs. He and Dhawan continued to dominate the bowling, Shaw bringing up his 50 off 35 balls off the last ball of the tenth over as Delhi put up 80 at the half-way mark.
Rashid Khan, bowling his second over, ended the flourishing stand with his second delivery, bowling Dhawan out for 28 off 26 balls.
The Afghan spinner sent down a quick one and Dhawan, who came down to launch it, failed to read the turn and found his leg-stump disturbed. Delhi were 81 for 1.
Shaw was then run out following Suchith's third delivery in the 12th over to Rishabh Pant. The batsman came down the wicket and was beaten by the spin. As wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow was unable to collect the ball cleanly, Delhi's skipper survived a stumping chance.
However, there was more drama on store off that delivery, as Shaw walked out of his crease. Before he could turn around and regain ground, a throw from Khaleel Ahmed from short fine leg saw Suchith collect the ball whip off the bails. Shaw was out for 53 off 39 balls, which included 7 fours and a six.
Pant and Steven Smith then launched an assault, taking Delhi to 127-2 at the end of the 16th over.
Rashid Khan had to endure the brunt of their attack as he finished his spell with figures of 4-0-31-1, the most expensive in five matches in IPL 2021.
Pant (37) and Smith put on 58 runs for the third wicket before the former was caught by Suchit off the bowling of Siddarth Kaul in the 19th over.
Kaul picked his second wicket, dismissing Shimron Hetmyer with the last delivery of the over as Delhi were reduced to 141-4.
Smith hit a four and a six in the final over to finish with 39 off 29 balls, which included a four and six, as Delhi Capitals posted 159-4 in their 20 overs.
