Purnendu Maji and Srinivas Bhogle present the most valuable players in IPL-4
It was no surprise that Chris Gayle proved to be IPL4's most valuable player. But it must bother him (and Vijay Mallya) that his one batting failure in the final (he bowled rather well) may have cost RCB the big prize.
While individual players very significantly influence T20 matches (much, much more than ODI matches), you still need a team effort to get past the finishing line.
The table below shows the 50 most valuable players of IPL4 in terms of performance measured using the most valuable player index (MVPI). MVPI recognizes that batsmen must score a lot of runs (and quickly); bowlers must take a lot of wickets (conceding as few runs as possible) and fielding is vitally important for success.
MVPI does not add additional points to wicket-keepers (because they get more catches, more opportunities for stumpings and more participation in run outs all of which fetch them many more fielding points, as seen in the table) and to captains (because we don't have any objective measure to evaluate a captain's good or bad performance).

There's a simple message from this table that the maximum value is offered by explosive players (who score runs very fast or take a lot of wickets with good economy rates Gayle and Lasith Malinga are great examples) or by steady and consistent players who contribute something significant match after match think of Virat Kohli, Jacques Kallis, Munaf Patel and Sachin Tendulkar). The challenge for franchise owners is to find the right mix.
Let us also count how many players from the top four teams figure in the top 50 MVPI list: CSK: 8; RCB: 5; MI: 7 and KKR: 5. The message here seems to be that CSK and MI are the most balanced teams (remember that they retained the most players from the earlier squad), while RCB and KKR need to worry more about team stability.
-----
Let us end off by listing the paisa vasool index (which estimates how much the franchise owner paid in US$ for every 'run' scored) of all the expensive players (paid more than $400,000). A 5-star rating indicates 'best buys', and the number of stars reduce as the value diminishes.
Players without a star rating may have performed well, but been way too expensive, or may have a high paisa vasool index (PVI) because they were on the bench and didn't get enough opportunities to perform.
We must emphasize again that PVI only measures 'on-field' performance. It does not factor in the player's brand value, which helps bring in more crowds or eyeballs, or other services the player may have offered the franchise owner.
