We're approximately at the halfway mark of IPL3 and it is a good time to ask which players are doing well and which players aren't.
Our key metric is the most valuable player index (MVPI) that expresses a cricketer's all-round performance in terms of a run equivalent. If Irfan Pathan currently has a MVPI of 287 it means that his batting, bowling and fielding performance is equivalent to scoring 287 runs.
We know that Irfan Pathan is paid $925,000 by KXIP for playing his 14 (or more) matches of IPL3. He has (as on the morning of 1 April 2010) played half of his matches (7 out of 14) so he has earned half of his $925,000 price, i.e. $462,500.
Let's do some simple arithmetic. In return for $462,500, Irfan has contributed 287 runs. KXIP is therefore currently paying Irfan $462,500/287 = $1611 per run.
We define Irfan Pathan's paisa vasool index (PVI) to be 1611. The lower a player's PVI, more the value he offers his franchise on the cricketing field.
The table below looks at the statistics of all IPL3 players who have played at least 4 matches. Looking at this table, we can identify players offering the greatest or the least value to their franchise.
The table is arranged in the decreasing order of the MVPI. We have also given a star rating based on the PVI. The best players have the largest MVPI and the most stars. Players not doing well have low MVPI and few (or no) stars.
