Sangakkara's wicket proved costly for SL

June 21, 2013 10:11 IST

The turning point of the match has Kumar Sangakkara's wicket.

Sri Lanka had made a terrible start, losing Kusal Perera (4) and Lahiru Thirimanne (7) early.

The experienced Tillekeratne Dilshan also walked off the field after hurting his leg.

Sangakkara had faced 44 balls for his 17 but more importantly occupied the crease for a long time.

Besides, his partnership with Mahela Jayawardene could have been potentially dangerous for India.

When Ishant Sharma had him caught by Suresh Raina at second slip in the 18th over, it not only reduced Sri Lanka to 41 for three but also put additional pressure on Jayawardene.

Though Jayawardene (38) and captain Angelo Mathews (51) added 78 runs for the fourth wicket, they took about 19 overs for the same, doing little to repair the damaged caused at the top.

Sri Lanka, as a result, managed only a modest total (181-8) and ite was a relatively easy chase for India.
