David Hussey and Mitchell Johnson helped Australia secure an easy six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening Twenty20 in Wellington on Friday.

Set a paltry 119 to win, the visitors got to their target with 24 balls to spare.

After restricting New Zealand for 118, Australia made a steady start before losing three wickets that pegged them back at 39 for three.

However a 67-run stand between Hussey and skipper Michael Clarke eased nerves and Cameron White finished the game with a six.

Hussey hit five boundaries in his 36-ball 46, including three in one Nathan McCullum over, while Clarke's unbeaten 18 came at a rather more sedate pace.

Earlier in the day, Vettori won the toss and chose to bat but was probably regretting the decision when New Zealand were 13 for two after less than five overs as they struggled to cope with the pace of Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes and Johnson.

James Franklin top-scored for the hosts with 43, while Martin Guptill contributed 30.

Johnson took three wickets for 19 runs.

The second and final T20 match of the series is in Christchurch on Sunday.
