Goa's Ranji team interim captain Swapnil Asnodkar could find himself in deep trouble following deposition by a fellow-player before the Goa Cricket Association, claiming that he had hinted at calling off the match against Maharashtra, at Porvorim, near Panaji, during the fourth over itself.
GCA president Dayanand Narvekar said Abhishek Raut, who was on the field along with Asnodkar, gave in writing that "Swapnil had asked him not to lose his wicket" although the coaches had asked the team members to go for the kill.
"You can see the recording in which fifth over was given maiden by Swapnil and he later shook hands to call off the match," Narvekar said, adding that the captain's decision is being probed by the GCA from all angles.
Goa had a target of 130 runs from 19 overs, with nine wickets in hand, which Narvekar said was gettable, considering the performance of the team during its first innings.
Asnodkar played for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League T20 tournament.
Asked whether it could be an instance of match-fixing, Narvekar refused to comment.
"I am not aware what was it," he said adding that the GCA will be formally initiating enquiry into the incident by calling a special meeting this week.
The GCA has already decided to drop Asnodkar for two Ranji Trophy matches for his actions.
"It will be difficult for Asnodkar to get back in the team," he said refusing to elaborate.
Asnodkar conceded that it was his mistake to call off the game.
"But I took the decision considering the pitch," he had told reporters earlier this week.
Responding to another question on match-fixing, Narvekar said the match was big news across the nation.
"All mainstream media had covered the match," he said, adding, unlike other matches, Ranji cricket players are allowed to carry their mobile phones in the dressing room.
Asked whether the GCA would cross check Asnodkar's mobile records, Narvekar said everything would be a part of the enquiry.
