Giles to miss Pakistan one-dayers

November 26, 2005 20:34 IST

England spinner Ashley Giles will miss the one-day series against Pakistan and return home for surgery on a long standing hip cartilage problem after the third Test in Lahore.

"The decision to withdraw Giles from the one-day squad has been taken with a view to improving his chances of being fit for the tour of India which is scheduled to depart in late February," the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in a statement.

All rounder Ian Blackwell has been called up to the squad for the five-match one-day series due to start on December 10.

Blackwell, 27, has played 23 one-dayers for England, averaging 16.16 with the bat and taking 15 wickets. His last one-day appearance was against New Zealand in June last year.

Ian Bell is on standby for the one-day series if captain Michael Vaughan is unavailable because of injury.

Vaughan missed the first Test against Pakistan after aggravating a long-term knee injury in a warm-up match in Lahore.

Bell made 115 in the second Test and had innings of 71 and 31 in the first match.

Pakistan lead the Test series 1-0. The third and final match in Lahore begins on November 29.
