Despite having allowed Australia to score 316 runs on the opening day, the silver lining for Team India was the fact that they had managed to send seven of the Australian batsmen back to the pavillion.
The home team’s chances would have been boosted further had it managed to take the remaining three wickets early on the second morning.
Michael Clarke (130) and Peter Siddle (19) frustrated India for most of the session, putting on 54 runs in a vital eighth wicket stand.
And even after the home team got them dismissed in quick succession, James Pattinson (15 not out) added to the frustration, even forcing the session to be extended beyond the stipulated time.
India had to bowl a whopping 38 overs to take the three remaining Australian wickets and it is where they erred. They didn’t simply press hard for the wickets.
