India batsman Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the remaining three One-dayers and one-off Twenty20 against England after sustaining a fracture on the middle finger of his right hand.
Vijay, who will join the squad in England at the earliest, was the teams' highest run-getter in the five-match Test series, which India lost 3-1.
The Tamil Nadu batsman scored a ton and two half-centuries in the 10 innings he opened for the visitors.
The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side leads the five-match ODI series 1-0 after a 133-run victory (Duckworth/Lewis method) in the second match in Cardiff.
The opening ODI in Bristol was washed off and the action now shifts to Trent Bridge with the third match slated to be played on Saturday.
