Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is set to be appointed as a batting consultant by England for their upcoming Test and limited-overs series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

According to the Guardian, an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) spokesperson admitted that they have had some initial conversations with Jayawardene regarding a short-term consultancy role in view of his familiarity with sub-continental conditions, but added that nothing had been agreed at the moment.

Jayawardene, who ended his stellar 18-year international career after the World Cup, had earlier worked with England coach Trevor Bayliss, and his assistant, Paul Farbrace in Sri Lanka.

Jayawardene made his debut against India in Colombo in 1997 in a match where Sri Lanka amassed the highest total in Test cricket, 952 for six declared.
