Dutch newspapers rejoice at upset win over England

June 06, 2009 17:46 IST

Dutch newspapers were as surprised as the Twenty20 World Cup hosts by their team's upset win over England in the opening game of the tournament at Lord's on Friday.

The 500/1 tournament outsiders beat the host nation from an overthrow off the last ball of the match

"Cricket is no longer so boring," said a headline in the national daily NRC Handelsblad. "The Dutch cricketers at Twenty20... beat hosts England to deliver a sensational opening game."

Several Saturday papers gleefully covered the reaction by "furious English newspapers".

"First was surprise on the faces of the English at Lord's, then bewilderment," said the Rotterdam daily Algemeen Dagblad.

"The beautiful stadium was filled...with the bright orange of the Dutch fans who had much to cheer about."

"Dutch cricketers measured up to the top of the world in London," said the Volkskrant. "The Dutch are suddenly in the spotlight."
