Cricketer Joginder Sharma operated upon and stable

Joginder Sharma, who suffered head injuries in a road accident in New Delhi on Thursday was operated upon and is recovering at a private hospital.

The 28-year-old cricketer, who was a member of India's Twenty20 World Cup-winning squad in 2007, was admitted around noon on Thursday after a local doctor advised his friends and relatives to take him to a specialist.

"He was going to Palam cricket ground from Dwarka in west Delhi around 6.30 in the morning along with two of his friends when his vehicle met with an accident. He was operated upon by Dr Sonal Gupta. He is recovering and stable. If all goes well, he will be shifted to the general room by the afternoon," his brother Ashwini Sharma told rediff.com on Friday morning.

"He is conscious and in a position to communicate. He is still in the intensive care unit, where he was moved after the operation," his brother added.

Sharma is resident of Rohtak in Haryana. The all-rounder became an instant hero when he dismissed Pakistan's Misbah-ul Haq in the final over of the T20 World Cup final, which India won by five runs.

Officials of the Haryana Cricket Association also visited the hospital to enquire about Sharma's his condition.

Asked how soon Sharma will take to recover, his relatives expressed hope that it would be soon.

"Since he received head injuries we cannot say anything till the doctors permit him to start playing cricket. We are hopeful it will happen soon," said one of his friends.
